iPhone 5s Marries iPhone 6s and Their Kid is iPhone SE?

Earlier on 21st, as Caption Cook stepped into the spotlight in Apple’s Cupertino campus, the rumor mill which had been spinning for half a year on the long-awaited 4 inch new iteration of iPhone finally came to a stop. Hooray, there we finally had it, not iPhone 6c, not iPhone Mini, nor iPhone 5se, but iPhone SE, which does match to one of the leaks just from last month!

At the first glance when it is unveiled, you won’t believe if not seeing it with your own eyes. The new iPhone SE has exactly the same complexion as iPhone 5s, with only one added color option of rose gold. What the hell is Apple doing? Why does Cupertino re-announce an outdated iPhone 5s? Well, if you tear it open, the truth is actually under the hood, at least according to Apple itself. Down beneath the shell, iPhone SE carries almost the same weapons found on its bigger 6s brother, which is also why they are advertising it under the slogan of the most powerful 4-inch smart phone the world has ever seen.

What Does that SE Stand for?

As usual, Apple does not officially enlighten us why the new smaller iPhone is named under the SE tag, but people have imaginations! Among the internet talks, the seemingly most logical and persuasive one is the “Special Edition” and those who support this assumption have one thing in common. They believe Apple rolls out this most powerful than ever yet the historically cheap 4 inch iPhone with two primary goals in mind, one is to cater the male consumers who need to throw their phones into the pockets, and the other one is to steal the market share in the mid-range market especially from the developing Asian countries like China and India. This is to say, Apple calls it iPhone SE in the hope that it can accomplish those two special duties. Still, there are others who even put a joke on this, saying that the SE actually means the “Stupid Edition” or the “Sorry Edition”, because they firmly believe, while the entire smart phone world is going only but bigger, it is against the general trend and irrational to bring such a smaller screen up to the table. Who will ever give a second thought on a 4-inch smart phone once he already gets used to a phablet, let alone returning to it? Whoa, does make some sense, doesn’t it?

Despite declining for an official clarification, Apple does not try to keep their staff members from talking about it personally. Earlier today, a Twitter post from Apple’s Phil Schiller in response to Jason Cipriani from Fortune was spotted, and in that Tweet, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing explained that “SE” is the abbreviation of “Special Edition”. Seriously, do you really feel how special the iPhone SE is, other than a 6s in a diminished size? Believe it or not, considering Phil’s position at Apple, what he said couldn’t be just joking.

What’s Apple’s Real Plan on iPhone SE?

As the world’s most valuable company and a company who puts more than 90 percent of the profit out of the smart phone sector into its own pocket, Apple never does anything out of no reason. Every single move, there must be enough homework done! It is no secret that the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs believes that the 4 inch is the perfect size that a single human hand can hold and operate without any obstacles. It looks like that his successor Tim Cook still has this belief. It is also believed that going to the 4.7 and 5.5 inch is against the original intention of Tim Cook in the first place, however, to prevent competitors from grabbing more market share, they just have to do what they are reluctant to, because there is no better option left!

A research on the active iPhone users from Mixpanel shows that there are approximately 30.22% of the users are on the 4-inch screen, among which iPhone 5s makes 20% contribution, iPhone 5 and 5c takes 7.53% and 5.66% respectively. This is the solid proof that not everyone wants to go big. Smart phones have life cycles, even the best made iPhones. So there is one day those small iPhone users need to replace their old ones, and to encourage them to upgrade, there must be a new model that gives all the bells and whistles. Sadly and unfortunately, the aging iPhone 5s is far from being able to carry the duty any more. This is maybe the number 1 plan for releasing the 4 inch iPhone SE.

Another plan for this could be, as aforementioned, the intention to break into the mid-level markets and to regain the waning market share especially from outside of the US soil. According to a smart phone OS share research conducted by the 3rd party research company Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Apple is gradually losing its market share to Android both in its native market and many non-US markets like Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Australia, Japan, Span and other European counties, with the only exception of China. Even Tim Cook himself admits that global iPhone sales might meet its lowest in this March. But, rationally speaking, no solid evidence shows that the international decrease in sales has anything to do with the screen size, after all, they already have the 4.7 inch 6 and 6s, and the 5.5 inch 6 Plus and 6s Plus out there drawing  potential large screen lovers’ attention away from Android.

Why Not a Brand New Design?

It is everyone’s belief that an all-new design will surely make it easier to usher in new customers. Why doesn’t Apple give the iPhone SE a completely new design? Since when does Apple finally learn the greatest philosophy that no design is the best design? Where have all the calls for inovation been gone? What have the most talented designers that Apple is notably famous for been doing in the past few months? Maybe the Cupertino company simply wants to leave their precious designing brains to the next-gen iPhone 7? Maybe they are still busying finding a better way to remove the 3.5mm audio jack? Sadly again, none of these seems to be a good excuse, the real one turns out to be quite pragmatic and realistic. As mentioned before, global iPhone sales are continuingly dropping, analysts are also predicting a sales bottleneck this year, plus the fact that Apple’s chain suppliers are indicating that Apple is significantly cutting off the orders on 6s and the Plus version, it is safe to assume that by skinning the iPhone 6s’ internals with 5s’ coat, Apple can destock the components they still have for both the 5s and 6s! Three birds with one stone! What a genius idea it is!

Another potential reason which Apple surely will not admit is that the iPhone 5s is so far the most beautiful masterpiece Apple ever created. Of course, truth or not, it is totally depends on users’ aesthetics perspectives. Look at the white bar at the top and bottom of 6, 6s and their Plus siblings, don’t they look ugly? How do you feel about the protruding camera lens? Well on the 5s and SE, you won’t see both. Perhaps Apple’s top geniuses have managed a way to ditch those two designing flaws in the next flagship scheduled for the fall event? Do wish they will nail it.

Will iPhone SE Make a Hit or Repeat the 5c’s Flop?

It is not the first time Apple tried to make a budget friendly iPhone. Almost three years ago, Apple made its first attempt to enter the mid-level or the entry level market by introducing the colorful iPhone 5c. Before that polycarbonate 4-inch iPhone came out, both consumers and insiders believe it would be a cheaper mid-range model compared to the then flagship 5s, however, to everyone’s disappointment, it came out with an astonishingly high price tag starting at $449 with the 8GB version. Considering the inferior specs and the lack of most new features that the 5s enjoys, the iPhone 5c eventually proved itself a total failure.

Obviously, Apple does learn one thing or two from its previous flop, which is why this time in its second attempt, they packed the SE model with most of the internals found on the flagship 6s, and priced it at a seemingly more compelling level, which starts at $399 with the 16GB version. In terms of features, the SE also shares most of the robust functions available on 6s, like the Apple Pay, near field communication (aka NFC), live photos, the 12-megapixel rear iSight Camera, the A9 chip with M9 motion coprocessor, and the 2GB RAM, etc. By spec-wise, it does feel like a compact phone, which looks definitely better than the plastic feeling 5c. The question is, will consumers buy it this time? It seems that its competitors from Android don’t think that way, and they are not scared by it either. Anyway, it is still too early to say whether iPhone SE will turn out to be a giant success, or it will simply repeat the 5C’s flop. After all, the shipment is not started yet. Guess we’ll just wait and see.

Exclusive: DVDFab CinaviaRemoval HD review

DVDFab has released a new version of their software, with an additional capability that will be welcomed by their existing customers, and will certainly increase interest in their products. This new feature is the removal of the Cinavia signal found in many Blu-ray movies. They call their solution CinaviaRemoval HD and told us it has been developed totally in-house. In this review we're going to test if it indeed removes Cinavia and if so, how good the resulting audio quality is.
DVDFab was kind enough to offer Myce.com an early, developer's version of the program so that we could conduct a few tests. At the time of the tests, only one Blu-ray movie was suggested for the tests, so Cinavia protection may have to be defeated on an individual, case by case basis. But this is speculation on my part, as we have not been given any information on how DVDFab is working to remove the audio watermark.

Cinavia

For those of you unfamiliar with Cinavia, you should be aware that it is part of the official Blu-ray digital rights management, intended to impede copying of Blu-ray discs and copying of movies by camcorders in theaters. Cinavia is an audio watermark that exists in the normal hearing range, and detection of the watermark is done by the Blu-ray player, or officially sanctioned Blu-ray software player. All Blu-ray disc players introduced since March of 2012 must include Cinavia detection capability. Cinavia doesn't actually prevent making copies of movies, it simply provides a way to stop playback of the audio in ripped copies if you use a Blu-ray player.

Tests with DVDFab CinaviaRemoval HD

For the purpose of these tests, I downloaded the developer's version of DVDFab 9 and installed normally. The movie we were required to use is called Kick-Ass 2, and is known to have Cinavia prior to these tests. To make certain that my version of the movie had Cinavia, I ripped the entire movie to the hard drive and played it with Arcsoft TMT 6, which played it normally for twenty minutes, then muted the audio, and displayed the Cinavia warning.
We were advised to use Main Movie mode only, so I selected Copy and Main Movie as the two primary controls within DVDFab. Once DVDFab decrypted the movie, a pop-up window appeared with this message:
DVDFab Cinavia message
Though DVDFab advised that you need to click on the red Cinavia logo to remove it from your new copy, I found that the program was set to automatically remove it, with an X through the symbol already. Here is a picture of the control as it showed up.
DVDFab Cinavia control
You can toggle the Cinavia removal icon on and off.
To make my copy, I clicked on Start and waited for the program to finish. The resulting copy was approximately 22GB, down from the original 27.4GB. Kick-Ass 2 uses DTS-HD MA audio, and it was originally 1.57GB in size. The audio produced by DVDFab was LPCM and it came out as 3.31GB in size, which is not surprising when producing an uncompressed audio stream.

Audio quality

The real question at this point is, how good is the audio? My opinion is that it is very good.
Here are links to two clips, one is from the original audio, the second is from the LPCM audio produced by DVDFab. Both are from the same section of the movie and last about a minute. They are fairly large files, so be warned.
Original audio  (13.9 MB)| Audio produced by DVDFab (32.7 MB) (Use e.g. VLC to playback the audio)

Network usage

The next step I tried was to use the Blu-ray Ripper section of DVDFab to make an MKV file, but instead of converting straight from the disc, I used the ripped files I already had on the hard drive. While doing this, I noticed something in the program that I didn't expect. On the left hand side of the main window there is a progress report of what the program is doing. Here is a screenshot:
DVDFab conversion to MKV
You'll notice that the first line says, "Downloading the required files...". I was working from a decrypted copy of the movie, so it shouldn't have needed the online database for encryption. Was the program having to make some other adjustment to output to AAC audio format instead of the LPCM found in the Blu-ray copy? In any case, the resulting MKV also had good quality sound, similar to what I've already heard from the first test. The AAC audio stream was approximately 330MB in size.
I did attempt converting a second movie, Pitch Perfect 2, which is also known to have Cinavia, just as an experiment. There was no indication from DVDFab that the movie had Cinavia, nor did I get a message saying the program was downloading necessary files when I started to make an MKV file. The resulting file had Cinavia still, but that was to be expected, since DVDFab had not announced support for removal of Cinavia from this movie yet.  We should note that Pitch Perfect 2 has been added to the list of supported movies, but that happened after we finished these first few tests of the program.
And now we add a little bit more information on the way the program works. I installed the program in my second computer. Working from a decrypted copy on the hard drive, I attempted to make an MKV file, using the same settings as I had done on my main computer. But this time, I disconnected the computer from the internet before starting the Ripper section within DVDFab. Fab indicated that the movie had Cinavia, and it would be removed. I got the same working messages, including the one that said it was downloading necessary files. But this time, it failed to remove Cinavia. Therefore it is obvious that the program requires an internet connection as part of the removal process.
Intrigued by this result, and after a hint from Seán Byrne, one of the administrators here at Myce, I decided to make yet another MKV file from the decrypted movie on the hard drive. This time I watched the network activity as the movie was being processed. It seems that DVDFab downloads quite a lot of material the entire time that the video is being encoded. It pegged out my extremely slow internet connection (6mpbs) while working on the MKV file. When the program reached 99% done, my network use dropped back down near zero.
I suspect DVDFab imports the audio in some form or another, much like the "database" files of one of its competitors in this field.

Is Cinavia removed?

And so we come to the last question. Did DVDFab successfully remove Cinavia when it was allowed to access the internet? I tested both the Blu-ray copy with LPCM audio and the first MKV file using Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater 6, which can detect Cinavia in virtually any format. There was no muting of the audio after twenty minutes of play, nor did the Cinavia warning show up.
I also tested both versions in a new command line tool that checks for Cinavia, and it reported that neither of my first two copies had the Cinavia watermark. Only the version made without internet access still had Cinavia.
So, I have to believe that DVDFab has worked properly for this particular movie. By the way, making me watch Kick-Ass 2 repeatedly while testing amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. I may have to ask for a raise around here.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see how quickly other movies with Cinavia are added to the list that DVDFab can handle. But in this very early look at their program, it seems to be a success. There are some questions still on exactly what the program is doing...with no clear answer as to whether it is defeating the Cinavia signal in a new method, or is following the footsteps of other software that uses databases.

Following, run DVDFab 9. Before using Cinavia Removal HD, you need to get the Cinavia Removal feature enabled. It is super easy, just move to the top right corner of the interface and click the reverse triangle of Common Setting, then go to the Blu-ray tab, and tick the related two options.

Step 2: Load the Cinavia protected Blu-ray disc, and remove the Cinavia affected audio
There may be little difference depending whether Blu-ray Copy or Blu-ray Ripper you are using. If you use Blu-ray Copy, please choose Main Movie. If you use Blu-ray Ripper, then just choose the profile you need.
Next, insert the Cinavia protected Blu-ray disc into the Blu-ray drive, or navigate it through the Add buttons on the main UI. You can also simply drag & drop it into the main UI if it comes to be an ISO file or a folder. Then, a window with that message will come into your sight:

After the source loading, move to the audio track section. Select the audio track protected by Cinavia, and click on the Cinavia logo until there is a red slash across it.

After that, select the output titles, subtitles, output size you need, and select the output directory at the Save to part.

Step 3: Start to remove Cinavia protection
Now that you've selected the Cinavia protected audio track and set it to be slashed, then just begin the task to remove the Cinavia protection. Once the Start button at the bottom right corner is hit, the Cinavia removal processing is started. The processing doesn't require a long period of time, and after it is finished, you will get a lossless PCM audio track with the quality almost the same as the original one.

To be frank, though DVDFab CinaviaRemoval HD is an efficient solution, and you can get a lossless resultant audio file, there is a limitation of the supported sources. That is to say, currently, it can't support all Cinavia protected Blu-day discs. But others will be added soon. To know which Blu-ray discs are supported, please read carefully its product page inside DVDFab official website.
